Flower Meanings

In Victorian times, certain flowers had specific meanings because the flower selection was limited and people used more symbols and gestures to communicate than words. But today, with so many flower choices, there are no rules - it's the sentiment that gives the gift its meaning. Your florist can help you send the right message. Many people assign their own personal meanings - a flower or color that might remind them of a special event or moment in their lives. For those interested in the historic meanings of flowers, the Society of American Florists has compiled this list from a variety of different sources:

Black Diamond Ring Not Your Typical Ring

Black Diamond rings are strange rings if you compare them to the ‘usual’. They are an opaque black color and worth a lot more than white diamonds or yellow diamonds-- in fact they are the most expensive of all diamonds even though they actually have the same strength as any other diamond! They are the rarest of all the diamonds and are mainly found in Brazil and have a great history behind them too. They formed in the centre of the earth about 3.5 billion years ago and with volcanic eruptions they are brought to the surface. The pressure and infernal heat is what causes it to form and they are in the middle of the transitional stage between granite and white diamonds.

Black diamond rings look best when placed in Titanium. A black diamond is considered a man ’s diamond, and when placed in Titanium the darkness of it is increased a lot. They look best when cut in a simple cut (16 faces or facets) and do not shine much. They can also be placed in yellow or white gold, but appear best in Titanium. The best way to display a black diamond is when it is next to or surrounded by white diamonds, color G – K, this creates a big contrast between the two, making the black diamond look more black and the white diamonds look whiter. The contrast between the two makes this diamond sell faster and adds to the value of the ring; generally the ring can sell for double its actual value when white diamonds are placed alongside it.
The mythology behind the black diamond is very contrary. The Indians thought the black diamond was a cursed stone, as it represented the eyes of snakes and spiders. To cross the path or find this diamond was a sign of death, the stone became the stone of the god Yama, the god of death. In Italy the stone was considered a stone that could repair a marriage, whenever a couple was fighting or considering divorce, they would just have to touch the stone and then all concerns would go into the stone and out of the couple.
There are a few very famous black diamonds. The first is a black diamond that weighs 55.85 carats and was so named in the occasion of Amsterdam 's 700th anniversary. The second black diamond was found in Brazil . The black diamond of Bahia which was discovered in Brazil is equally famous. This 350 carats stone is famous for its unpolished rugged look. It was so hard it could not be polished. The last is Black Star of Africa; it is also regarded to be the largest colored-diamond in the world. It weighed 202 carat and was valued at 1.2 million US dollars. All these diamonds, of course are under lock and key with a 24 hour armed guard.

Alcon launches Dailies Total 1

Alcon has officially launched its eagerly-awaited Dailies Total 1 contact lens in the UK and promised a new era in comfort through water gradient technology.
The technology uses an increase in water content, from 33 per cent in the core of the lens to 80 per cent on the surface, to mimic the water content of the cornea and permit higher oxygen transmissibility than rival dailies.
The contact lens, a first silicone hydrogel (SiH)-based daily lens released under the brand, will be sent to practices this month following a 10 year development plan. Over the past two years it has been released in other European markets, hitting Nordic and Benelux countries first.
Dailies Total1 global manager Mark Draper said it created a new category of contact lenses aside from silicone hydrogel and would be sold at the premium end of the market. He said: 'It has never been done before where you have different material properties from core to surface.'
The 0.9mm-thick lenses, made using Alcon's patented 'LightStream' manufacturing process, were introduced at a media briefing in London last week and reached practices on April 2. Alcon's trial patients rated the lenses 9.5 out of 10 at the beginning of the day and 9.2 at the end.
Alcon said Dailes Total1's non-siH surface gel resulted in improved 'lubricity' - a relatively new measure of comfort - and the lens glided faster through water in a race against rival brands shown to journalists.
Dailies Total1 senior brand manager Andrea Anderson said: 'This is something we think is going to revolutionise the market.'
She added that 44 per cent of contact lenses experienced discomfort. 'This means they are not satisfied with their contact lenses and there is a risk they will drop out of the contact lens market,' she said.
Alcon has found there are 240,000 contact lens drop-outs in the UK and Ireland per year, equating to around £26.5m in lost sales and costing the average practice £3,000 each year.
'We are bringing to market here a product that is so comfortable you feel like you are wearing nothing. Part-time contact lens patients would wear them more if they felt they were more comfortable. There is also an opportunity to upgrade full-time patients because we can make satisfied patients even happier with their contact lens experience,' added Anderson.
As part of the launch Alcon was to send out an 18-strong practice academy team to explain how the new lens worked to practitioners.
Professional services manager Andrew Elder-Smith added: 'We are not asking people to take a huge amount of time to go out of practice. We will go to them.'

Responsive Web Design

Responsive Website Design is becoming a bit like a brilliant, yet over-played song. It seems like everyone has had their say, and Ethan Marcotte’s agenda has never looked healthier. There’s good reason for this though; the concept is simple, the motives are logical, the technology is straight-forward and the results are extremely satisfying.
2011 saw an explosion in the number of websites built responsively, and the beauty of it is that we’re all involved in developing the process. It’s still in its youth, designers and developers are concocting new approaches all the time, and we’re a long way off nailing down any real best-practices. Should we first design for large screens and use media queries to gracefully degrade our designs for mobile? Or should we design for mobile first, progressively enhancing for more capable devices? Paul Irish kicked off an interesting thread over on GitHub if you’d like to dive into the discussion.
One thing RWD has shone a light on is the focus on content. Aside from all other factors, the content of any given website is what’s important; the meat-and-two-veg needs to be legible, accessible, and clear on any device. Designers are certainly taking this on board as is evident in many of 2011′s emerging websites.
When all’s said and done though, even if you’re a little tired of seeing yet more RWD tutorials and articles cropping up, stay tuned. 2012 is going to see big developments in the way we all approach it.
